Taoist Diet

Old Diet
Taoists engaged in "Bigu 辟穀", the abstention of grains, because they thought the rotting of the grains in the intestine would attract "demonic creatures" called, "three worms". These demons would eat their intestines and take over their bodies.
Present Diet
Taoists are recommended to avoid beans, grains, meat, and alcohol unless it is served as festival food. They eat based on a frugal diet, which is mostly made up of cereals. There is a system of seniority where the elderly are served first, and the youngest last. Also, every five to fifteen days, Taoists observe a periodic vegetarian feast.
Herbalism: Taoists believe that using different herbs can increase the positive energy in their bodies. By mixing two herbs that are opposites, they believe it can bring more positive energy into their bodies.
Abstain: from potent roots such as garlic and onion
